Osteoporosis

Older couple walking togetherOsteoporosis is a condition where the bones become weakened and brittle. It’s referred to as a “silent” disease, because there are usually no symptoms until a bone is broken. Symptoms of vertebral (spine) fracture include severe back pain, loss of height, or spine malformations, such as a stooped or hunched posture (kyphosis).

While osteoporosis is most common in women, it can also affect men. The condition occurs when the body fails to produce enough new bone, or when it breaks down old bone too quickly.

What Are Some Causes?

Nine times out of 10, women are under-eating protein, and they’re not getting enough calcium in their diet. Here are some other causes:

  • Hormonal changes
  • Lack of vitamin D
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Smoking and alcohol consumption
  • Medications

OsteoRevive & BoneCoach™

Betty Murray offers an osteoporosis program called OsteoRevive, as a result of serving on the team for BoneCoach, an international program that helps women with osteoporosis understand the many mechanisms that might contribute to their condition.

She serves as the functional medicine/nutrition lab expert for the BoneCoach program. Betty teaches 12 classes in the program about all the other mechanisms, so she sees many clients who don’t have anybody in their area who understands osteoporosis.

“We use functional medicine testing (e.g. nutritional deficiencies), as well as digestive and malabsorption testing. We also look at hormones and hormone metabolism, and all these other things that can contribute to bone loss. I want to help women navigate how to have stronger bones, not just bones that look better on a DEXA scan,” she said.

Reducing or Stopping Bone Loss

With Betty’s OsteoRevive Program, she puts functional medicine into action to either reduce or stop bone loss. In many cases, we’re seeing actual bone improvement without the use of osteoporosis medications, which have many negative side effects.

“A lot of women have many, many tests done, but they haven’t had anyone who can interpret them. I offer a 6-month program where we go through all their diagnostics, develop a plan, and typically retest things if needed,” said Betty.

She then offers a year-long program that a client can extend if they want to continue and have treatment through our clinic.
